Liner Notes:

This is a 4-track collaboration. @pfoo and @standup recorded tenor guitar and travel guitar, respectively, and mailed the tape to @nancyrost. She added the alto recorder and mailed the tape to me. I finished the song by adding lyrics and recording vocals, and mixing/mastering the song on my computer.

When I first listened to the song the guitars and the recorder made me think of old times, first medieval and later old west. I had the idea of having someone in a prison, counting the days — I think everyone can relate to that — and I wanted the chorus to bring some hope, like light shining through. I think the song would work well with different voices doing verse and chorus.

Tape 2:
1. @pfoo: tenor guitar
3. @standup: travel guitar
2. @nancyrost: alto recorder
4. @elesimo: lyrics/vocals

Lyrics:

The days grow long, the shadows, tall
Another day since my fall
I’ve paid my price — haven’t we all?
Scratched tallies on the prison wall

A day goes by, and another one
Time stands still when you’re alone
I’ve played the game, but all I’ve won
Are scratched tallies on the prison stone

Listen to my voice
It cuts through the rain
Even though it’s dark
The sun will rise again

There’s nothing new, there’s only more
Never the answer I’m looking for
It’s all the same, just like before
Scratched tallies on the prison floor

Should I stop or should I begin?
Death stands still with a familiar grin
I fight a battle I can never win
Scratched tallies on my naked skin

Listen to your breath
It cuts through the night
And the sky is darkest
Before it’s bright

The days grow long, the shadows tall
Another day since my fall
I’ve paid my price — haven’t we all?
Scratched tallies on the prison wall

Scratched tallies on the prison wall

Top 10 material for sure! Well, even though this won't maybe get in the spotify global top fifty, it is still really interesting. Lovely collaboration, it sort of reminds me of the Wicker Man soundtrack in an incidental way, maybe just the recorder making me think that? Really interesting subject for a song too. I do like that travel guitar second guitar part too.

Oh wow, it does have kind of a medieval feel to it. Nice job with the recorder Nancy, and lyrics/vocals Elesimo. I'm not sure I heard Eric's part before he mailed it off.

Lovely job, y'all. Sounds like a scary place we've created.

First tape on the books! Fun hearing everybody playing less familiar/less comfortable instruments. A scary place indeed. The lyrics fit perfectly, meshing with the change of key and mood between verses and choruses.
