Guard the Depths

Liner Notes:

This could be that inner voice that might prevent someone from expressing themselves creatively, or from pursuing any other goal that might cause fear or resistance. Partially inspired by the Stephen Pressfield book "The War of Art."

Lyrics:

VERSES:
Strike a match
Feel the burn
In the darkness
You don't understand

Break the latch
Find your turn
Escape the starkness
This is no wonderland

PRE:
If you try, you'll find me laughing
And you won't get very far
You'll soon be frantically trying
To prevent another scar

CHORUS:
Guard the Depths
And all will be fine
Guard the Depths
I insist that you confine
Yourself to this dungeon
You don't want to face the wrath
That I'll bring down upon you
If you fail to tow the line

VERSE:
Stay inside
No thought of leaving
Keep your dreams
Here safe with me

It’s best to hide
Don’t start believing
You might rip the seams
That keep you here for free

PRE:
But don't attempt to try my patience
You don't want to know
What's really out there
And what it all would show

CHORUS:
Guard the Depths
And all will be fine
Guard the Depths
I insist that you confine
Yourself to this dungeon
You don't want to face the wrath
That I'll bring down upon you
If you fail to tow the line

The great thing about getting stuck into 50/90 you can try all sorts. This is really different and very interesting. It's a more modern lyric yet a much more 80s style music. Love your vocals as well. Different good.

An interesting approach. I get the feel here that the individual's alter ego is holding him back. It's telling him that any attempts to break free of fear and resistance to try new things and explore will lead him back to staying closed or shut off from himself and the world. This alter ego says to guard the depths of his soul or feelings from the pain that potentially awaits in the world at large, either in self expression or interaction. Stay safe and locked away in fear which holds back creativity to say the least.

I find when in doubt regarding writing and posting at least here on the net, I push harder to overcome the fear by facing it so I think the theme if my analysis above is correct is relatable. If I'm wrong, the writing is interesting and thought provoking. Good musical sounds and vocals work well too.

love the quality of your voice when you stretch out those notes. good song too, with a provocative chorus and succinct verses.

I love the arrangement, there is a slight retro feel to it that works really well and it's full without being overfull.

Lured right in by the groove and those luscious synths. Those are some nifty drum sounds too. Intense vocal and super background singing. An all-around wonderful package of a song.
