Sean says,

There is a long standing tradition of composers setting the music for the parts of the Christian Liturgy (Mass). I was intrigued with the idea of attempting a mass in the 10 x 10s format. I approached metalfoot about it and he was in. We come from two different Christian denominations, but the liturgy is largely the same. One of the challenges at getting the parts of the mass down to 10s is that for many of them, the words are set and prescribed-- not to be changed. We changed them to fit the 10s constraint. We mostly succeeded with about 10s for each part. The sanctus (Holy Holy) ran to 15s. The Creed, with all of it's statements of belief was impossible to do in 10s, so we broke it into 3x10s segments.

I managed to get the final mix to fit exactly two minutes with 1s between each part, so our average was 11s per part. (Metalfoot was better than me at staying under 10s)

Alex says,

This was an interesting and tricky project to work on... and although Sean didn't know this I've done some work on a setting of the ordinary for the mass (or divine service as we call it in Lutheran parlance) in the past. I didn't use that this time but this *did* rekindle my idea to go back and work on that... probably not this year though. Thanks for the idea, Sean!

Love it! Hubby was listening in, too, and he loves it!

This is totally awesome! I love it!!! I can’t believe that you did mass in 2 minutes! Brilliant and beautiful and uplifting!!! I am glad you did not try to do the Lord’s Prayer in 10 seconds though!

Mass over in 2 minutes? Living the Catholic dream, right here :P

My regular mass does Cliff Richard's The Millennium Prayer in place of the Lord's Prayer at the start of the Communion Rite, at roughly 30bpm. Takes longer than this entire thing.

Seems a bit wrong to critique a mass, so I will say that I enjoyed it. Suitably reverent yet uplifting, while providing a good amount of variety for a weekly obligation. And it's in a key that male congregants can actually reach, so that's something.

I OD'd on religion as a kid--my dad being a minister--but I forget how moving and meaningful the music can be. I really enjoyed this, guys!

This 10 x 10 is crazy--but I've enjoyed the 3 examples of it that I've heard now so far. Keep it up!!

Oh this was amazing! so well done both of you!

and yeah a 2minute mass? unheard of!?!?! hahah but so well pulled off! all of those packed a punch

particularly fond of a 10s alleluia!! some brilliant harmonies in there. and the 3 part credo really made me smile how quick that all came out haha

Really nicely done!

Hats off, gentlemen! In this covid era, perhaps you could set this up as a drive-through service: get the whole mass, take communion, and hit the rode. It's the opposite of that Lyle Lovett song where the preacher won't shut up and everyone's getting really hungry Smile

Been quite a while since I've been to Mass, but this has a wonderful familiarity and warmth. I'm feeling it very personally.
It's a great combination of your talents as well. Amen!

That's a much shorter service than I grew up with! I forgot how much I actually liked service music when I did attend. We had folk setting that a previous priest had set that was absolutely beautiful. Who's going to set the shortest Requiem Mass now? Requiem for the Unremarkable Man.

Setting aside the seriousness of the ritual for the moment, the rushed, fast-forward aspect of this really made me giggle. It sounds like it was taken from an episode of Father Ted...

And what a whirlwind tour of musical styles; the disco segment was a hoot!
