In the Minor Keys

Liner Notes:

This is a sort of tribute to the late jazz trumpet player Chet Baker. He was a drug addict but, man, could he play and sing.

Lyrics:

Verse 1
Uneasy onstage… but a cigarette helps
It’s not hard to see… his mind’s somewhere else
Then he starts to play… and the pain melts away

(Chorus)
He lives in the minor keys
Lost yet found in melodies
Tarnished trumpet aches with proof
Voice betrays but tells the truth
Straight ahead the darkness calls
Still he’ll fly high until he falls

Verse 2
It’s Valentine’s Day… and he’s fetal in bed
His dream, almost blue… the needle tip, red
The fog's like a shield... from the light that reveals

(Chorus)
He lives in the minor keys
Lost yet found in melodies
Tarnished trumpet aches with proof
Voice betrays but tells the truth
Straight ahead the darkness calls
Still he’ll fly high until he falls

(Bridge)
As motel neon stabs the night
The trumpet player’s out of fight
He’s locked up in an old mistake
That slowly seals a user’s fate
But when he sings and blows the horn
The music sounds like it’s been torn
From every heart that ever mourned
A love that couldn’t be

(Chorus)
He lives in the minor keys
Lost yet found in melodies
Tarnished trumpet aches with proof
Voice betrays but tells the truth
Straight ahead the darkness calls
Still he’ll fly high until he falls

(Instrumental)

(Repeat chorus)

I like this one a lot - captures the twists and intensity well. So many good lines! Hangs together well narratively and rhythmically too.
I think I would change the "true Valentine" line -- the story is already told so well in a poetic, indirect way, so that one line feels too direct and out of place to me.

This is wonderful! Fantastic wordsmithery and you capture so much about Chet Baker in vivid detail...an excellent write indeed!
