Skirmish Prompt: Self-Portrait

Liz Says: I was thrilled that Catherine was open to trying a live skirmish with me! It was wonderful to see her skill and talent developing a song! It was a an interesting prompt with the two of us co-writing a self-portrait song. If you are trying to figure out who the self-portrait is of in the lyric, all I can say is that any of the adjectives that you have positive feelings about are me and the ones where you have less positive feelings are most likely Catherine Smile Seriously, it is not about either of us in particular but ideally captures the complexities of any of us at different times in our lives or in our day. It was delightful to work with Catherine on this song! Thanks, Catherine!!

Wacha says - This was so much fun and Liz was very patient repeating her lyrics to me several times because I couldn't read my handwriting. I've never actually written an song with anyone. I always just take their lyrics and add music or vice versa. This was a pure joy to work on! I want to revisit this one when I have time to really work on the production. It deserves a full arrangement.

On this track:
Vocals
Acoustic Guitar

I kept the production to a minimum since we were on the clock.

Lyrics:

Self Portrait

V1
invincible and strong
confident and fierce
rational and logical
a woman who hides
her tears

determined and brave
decisive and aware
inviting and accepting
free without
a care

C
painting a self portrait
a reflection of me
who I want to be
who I want you to see
but is there truth in pictures?
is this reality?
painting a self portrait
a portrait
of me

V2
uncertain and cautious
sensitive and scared
thoughtful and quiet
a woman who embraces
her tears

humble and happy
awkward and weird
compassionate and gentle
she holds her loved
ones dear

C
painting a self portrait
a reflection of me
who I want to be
who I want you to see
but is there truth in pictures?
is this reality?
painting a self portrait
a portrait
of me

B
darkness of the earth
boldness of the fire
pastels of the sky
passion and desire
painting a complex
picture of who
she really
really is

C
painting a self portrait
a reflection of me
who I want to be
who I want you to see
but is there truth in pictures?
is this reality?
painting a self portrait
a portrait
of me

Absolutely great to have done this a s a skirmish. The lyrics are very strong and the music givers them an added dimension. Really good vocal.

Great idea live skirmish collab! Good lyric well deliverec! Great work in a skirmish environment! If the skirmishes were a civilized time for me i it would be great fun to try.

This is superb. Both lyrically and performance. I get a Stevie Nicks vibe. Just amazing this was a skirmish song and I d love to hear it again if you redo it. Just brilliant

So cool to do a live skirmish with a partner! It sure turned out great, well-recorded with great guitar tone and vocals. I also hear a Stevie Nicks vibe in both the tune and in parts of the vocal. Love the "portrait" you made of the woman in the lyric, very good stuff.

Woah, collab skirmish! This has come together so beautifully - feels really coherent and together. Lovely performance as well. Amazing work! A definite keeper.

I like the way you bend vocal notes, and it does lend a bit of a Stevie Nicks vibe. I tried to comment on the lyric before but I think you two were editing the doc at the time. Anyway, I like the way it depicts complexity in an organized (and now I hear it, catchy) way. Great collab!

This is really amazing! I hope you gals do more of this! and I agree, a full production on this would be great, even if kept simplistic mainly 1v1 driven with just some frills/harmonies added.....that's really working for me on this self-reflective piece...........what a great and quick write all around!

I REALLY love that chorus! are we or aren't we, what we pretend to be???? question for the ages..........Really great stuff! Congrats you two! skirmished out a really nice gem here! I had nothing today hahaha. That question I asked myself was as far as I went on paper lol, didn't feel like stretching that thought any farther in just an hour....I'm glad you guys did hahah! *applause*

What a challenge to do a skirmish like this, and you absolutely nailed it! I love the power in the words, and the soul in the voice that sings them.

I’m so impressed with how this was created, and I love the theme it rests on. The descriptors are wonderfully worded, and I love how @wacha’s vocals give them extra life and strength. A song that gives room to be however we really are at the moment, and embrace it all. Really enjoyed the listen!
