Running On Fumes

Liner Notes:

This one seemed to have gone in many different directions. I have to admit that I have had this chord progression (C-G-F-Am) stuck in my head for over a week. Along with that, I've had Jackson Brown's Running On Empty also stuck in my head. I know, my head is often a strange place to be (there was one day long ago that I had the entire soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar stuck in my head - the songs playing in their really weird simultaneous medley). But on the plus side, it has given me this song.

I've been working on this for three days now (give or take time spent at the beach over the weekend - I've got a beach about 5 minutes away from my house, just over a couple of hills, really). I think my Muse has been a little undecided about it. I started out by recording three guitar loops (the chord progression, the bass & the lead line). And there the song sat for a long time. Until I had this idea to drop the loops into Buzz via Matilde Tracker. Next was trying to get the loops to line up to Buzz's sequencer (basically I needed to figure out the tempo). Then I added some Melotron c/o the RedTron MVK VSTi as well as some drums c/o HG Fortune's wonderful Percumat 2 Drum Machine VSTi. I let the song stew for another night & then this morning I wrote the lyrics (with the idea that I was doing a little better than Jackson Brown since I still had some fumes left in my tank Lol ). I then recorded the vocals directly into Buzz (c/o WDE's wonderful Easy Recorder Buzz Machine) & suddenly realized that I was using Buzz like a traditional DAW for the first time. Funny that…

Well, some sequencing, mixing & rendering later, we now have this. I think it still needs something, probably in the chorus. But it's GEF50-90 (Good-Enough-For-50-90). On to the next!

Running On Fumes

The car's in gear, so let's drive
The road beyond we can't deny
We may be running on fumes
But we're writing our own dooms

Granite cliffs pass us by
And there's a raven in the sky
Our hopes and dreams we might have shed
And taken to the road instead
We may be running on fumes
But we're writting our own dooms

I don't know where this road leads
But somewhere you know we'll be free
The car's in gear and we will drive
This road we're on we can't deny
We may be running on fumes
But we're writing our own dooms

Please keep your comments respectful, honest, and constructive. Please focus on the song and not the demo.

Nice song!

If you want to record it in time, make the drums first, then bass and then guitar and finally vocals.

You have a very nice high pitched voice. I don't know what to suggest, it doesn't need a new part or anything. Its almost like shoe gaze, which I like a lot. There is also a double meaning in the running on fumes that I like, could be about getting old, the environment or rascal driving.

This is a good one, it sounds like a mix of 90's alt rock with a drum machine and the combo works.
