Liner Notes:

Amy Winehouse died on this day in 2011, the latest in a line of female singers who died long before their time - Billie Holiday, Cass Elliot, Janis Joplin, Eva Cassidy and many more. This is a tribute to them all.
Full disclosure, I wrote most of this before the 50/90 so I won't count it as one of my 50. Maybe someone would like to set it to music?

Lyrics:

The Gal Who Sang the Blues

Verse 1
Smoky room, bluesy tune,
A voice just like a moan
Slinky hips, ruby lips
She sucked that microphone

Verse 2
Special lady, oozing class,
Not your next-door lass
Giving off that sultry look,
A barrel load of sass

Chorus:
She was the gal who sang the blues
Trying to make a name
She belted songs out every night
In her search for fame

Verse 3
When the band was packed away,
Down the road she’d sway
In her room she’d shed the tears,
Put her cool away

Bridge: (slower)
She’d find the bottle, take a sip
Help her through the day
Then she’d take another hit
To keep the blues at bay

Chorus:
She was the gal who sang the blues
Trying to make a name
She belted songs out every night
In her search for fame

Verse 4
The next night she’d be back on stage,
Struttin’ her stuff again
Audience clapping, tapping feet,
They didn’t feel her pain

Outro:
Then one night the punters waited,
Wondering where she’d gone
They didn’t know she’d gone for ever
Because her demons won.

Wonderful lyrics! Real nice progression in the verses, excellent outro. Great list of female singers in your liner notes (I love Billy Holiday and Eva Cassidy).
