metalfoot: I saw this lyric (*41365) by my friend the Wordsmith upon awaking this morning and realized it was made for me to sing. Pretty sure what I've come up with is more or less what he would expect from me, so I'm pulling rank and posting it without running it by him first. Thanks for the great lyric!

Lyrics:

All fire and all passion and all the way up
Entwined in a helical knot
Crescendoes of billions of beautiful things
A trillion times hotter than hot

They wink and they sparkle and wend their way t'wards
The outermost edge of it all
They dance and they flourish and swing back and forwards
They rise and they burn and they fall

And in case of emergency, that's where you head
If you're more into starjumps than winding up dead
The black and the gold leave no space to be grey
The exit's wherever in Starwell A

With head over heels and a front in the back
They curl and they swish like a cape
A curtain to rise on a backdrop of black
And light up your greatest escape

Your star may be lone but you'll never be lonely
When column A is about
For company fine's guaranteed when the only
Obvious exit is out

As bright as a button and warm as a flirt
More great than the earth and much older than dirt
The star sign is posted to light you the way
When sirens are calling, call Starwell A

So when your heart fills with the lusting to wander
And fire alarms trigger within
The map has been made for the outermost yonder
Waiting for you to begin

Break free from the bounds of a singular sun
Where every inch might be a mile
But remember, be safe, only walk, never run
And keep in a singular file

In case of emergency, that's where you head
If you're more into starjumps than winding up dead
The black and the gold leave no space to be grey
The exit's wherever in Starwell A

As bright as a button and warm as a flirt
More great than the earth and much older than dirt
The star sign is posted to light you the way
When sirens are calling, choose Starwell A
When sirens are calling, choose Starwell A

Nice melodic line. This interpretation really brings out the foreboding in the lyric (I mean, aside from the sirens, no room for ambiguity, and impending death)

Very moving. You did a very good collaboration in such a short space of time.

This was lovely.

Nice job on that "The exit's wherever in Starwell A"! What a cool hook.

I always love Steven's descriptions. I have never heard "wend" before.

And whistle solo! Biggrin Gotta love it!

This is one of those songs that can keep going and it'd be fine. A nice melody and fantastic lyrics with so many great phrases and lyrics. This arrangement fits the lyrics perfectly, very nice job both of you!

A lovely meandering melody backed by supple chords. Great lyrics (as always) & such a lovely performance. The melody, for some reason, makes me think of "One Of My Turns" from Pink Floyd's The Wall. Not entirely sure why. I really like the song.

See You In The Shadows…

This is a brilliant collaboration - the music and lyrics gel so beautifully together. Such a lofty and lyrical piece!

I liked this for much the same reasons I liked Colour of the Sky. The slow, dreamy treatment allows the lyrics, which simultaneously stargaze and navel-gaze, to do their thing. The chords in the title hook are gorgeous but the melody is lovely from start to finish.

Thanks for the follab, and here's to many more!

I was reading these lyrics earlier. You treated them perfectly. I like the alternating chord progression that gives the feeling of floating and endlessness. Beautiful folk song!

Great collab. The poetry of the lyric is matched by the lilting vocal. There's longing, lots of longing, lots of last exit longing here. Enjoyed my listen.

aye! sometimes a lyric just grabs ya one of those ask for forgiveness not permission things hahah

great melody! familiar but not instantly placeable.

I definitely see why these lyrics moved and inspired you! What a wonderful collab to start off with you two

This is lovely! I'm always a sucker for plaintive, melancholic, melodic tunes, and you deliver here. The story is perfectly constructed, absolutely engaging, though delivered to us with absolutely no context, nothing outside--so it retains a deep sense of mystery

Well, first off, these are some damn fine and even brilliant lyrics! Wow, just Wow! I keep reading them and being filled with wonder and excitement! Mr. Wordsmith, you have outdone yourself sir!

And Alex, I must say this is my favorite performance of yours so far! You have written beautiful music and played the guitar so wonderfully and sang so perfectly on this! You really brought these lyrics to life.

What a great collaboration!

Just love these lyrics and the inspiration behind them. Your mellow, dreamy interpretation fits well--especially the whistling!

That guitar chordal alternation is lovely, and the melody gives that melancholic feel without falling into gross sentimentality. It's a lovely lyric and it would've been so easy to fall into bathos. Clever words, mr wordsmith, clever words and images and metaphors. I've already accepted defeat, see?

You had me at "A trillion times hotter than hot". Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, but with astophysics. Love it!

Great collab, with sparkling, erudite lyrics and a lovely sad music. Helical knots, starjumps, singular suns ... an embarrassment of riches! Really well done and performed.
