Liner Notes:

I was intrigued by this lyric. Gave it a sad musical rendition. The guitar symbolizes the world that keeps on turning and the string trio represents the deep inner sadness of the singer who also keeps going but is in pain. I changed the title to the full hook 'cause I thought that was a better title. And for some reason, I couldn't sing the contraction. Maybe I'm an android. LOL

Doug: I forgive you for singing why is instead of why's! Wink This is really lovely, Susan. I've admired your voice for years and I'm so happy to have this collaboration with you. The chord changes are beautiful and the instrumental section is haunting -- reminds me of Nights in White Satin. Thank you!

Lyrics:

Why is it a Surprise?
(c) 2019 Crisp1 & scantey

Warm water laps against the sagging dock
The hillside shakes its summer coat
And the breeze brings back your scent to me
Far off on that boat
Far off on that boat

Your laughter’s ringing through my memories
And I still see your drowsy eyes
We can take away the things we give
Why’s it a surprise?
Why’s it a surprise?

I walk back to the little house
That used to be our home
Redtail circles overhead
Like me, he’s alone
Like me, he’s alone

(Instrumental)

Your laughter’s ringing through my memories
And I still see your drowsy eyes
So you took away the love you gave
Why’s it a surprise?
Why’s it a surprise?
Why’s it a surprise?

Love the imagery of the story. Nice musical journey. Clever! And who can sing “why’s” - a bit of a tongue twister, I think - lol!

it does sound like something the moody blues would have been drawn to. majestic orchestral pop.

Your voice and melodies give life to this sad story, the guitar embellishes it and the string section by the end helps to drive it all in with more force than you can imagine.

Nice lyrics and the way the surroundings and nature reflects and echoes this man's longing and loneliness is very touching. The main hook is great saying everything important in the form of a question. Music is beautiful and sad, the la-laas memorable and strings accentuate the emotions even further. Very good collaboration.

This is a lovely collab. The music and vocals perfectly render the wistful pictures painted in the lyrics. Beautiful.
