You're Not Here

Liner Notes:

The first line of this came from chit chat about ice cream, then turned into a strange song about my mom. She's been gone five years now. She was never sentimental, so a quirky song about things she told me not to do is my weird way of saying I miss her. We both had strong opinions and weren’t afraid to share them. But we also know that we could disagree without being disagreeable. This is about that.

Lyrics:

I'm gonna have ice cream in bed
I'm gonna watch TV in bed
I'm gonna have Cheetos in bed
I don't care what you said

You're not here
To tell me what to do
Are you?

You're not here to give me direction
And you're not here to give me affection
No you're not here
You're not here at all

I'm gonna have a cold beer at 9am
I'm gonna wear the same jeans until I can't
Gonna get myself a fake suntan
And I'm not watching the anchorman

You're not here
To tell me what to do
Are you?

You're not here to give me direction
And you're not here to give me affection
No you're not here
You're not here at all

It's been alright but sometimes
I just want a call
To hear your opinion
Though we don't agree at all
It would be nice
If I could just get your advice
Though I won't take it anyway

But you're not here
You're not here at all

Gonna get a tattoo on my bicep
I'm gonna sing raunchy, what the heck
Not gonna get married to some redneck
That won't change, no need to check

You're not here
To tell me what to do
Are you?

You're not here to give me direction
And you're not here to give me affection
No you're not here
You're not here at all

You're not here to give me direction
And you're not here to give me affection
No you're not here
You're not here at all

This says so much about your relationship-that you didn't agree but loved one another. Very nice Val!

Punchy delivery. I like how the verses build (not noticeable maybe based on a list) and changes the chorus meaning in such a sneaky way. I have difficulty writing about close relationships in my life. Hmmmm

Perfect concept for an unsentimental song about missing someone. Dewy eyes snuck up on me outta nowhere.

interesting way of dealing with the loss of a parent, very well executed. unsentimental but full of love and emotion.

This is really telling description of the strong relationship you had with your mother and how you interacted. It's lovely in it's sheer honesty.

The intimacy and longing feel so candid and speak to a very special loving relationship you had with your mom. It seems she is still giving you advice and guiding your way with her love and you are reminding her about how important she was, is, and always will be in your life. Beautifully expressed.
